Eddie Cochran - 1958 - Summertime Blues [originally posted on 6/14/2010]

My favorite minstrel of all time is Eddie Cochran. “Summertme Blues” is the best song ever sung! You don't have to agree, it's just the way it is with me. Hmm, where have I heard this before? Maybe I can get it past them!

Back in 1960-61 in the early days of rock and roll, to hear Eddie Cochran's lamentation, I knew then I wasn't alone. At 14 and living on a farm, I worked from dawn to dusk. To go out meant getting this older friend of mine with a car to let me ride along- fat chance of that happening. Picking up his big tittie girlfriend, he would drop me off at the A&W Drive-in, a local cruise spot, where I would wait for my friends.

It sucked being 14 and without wheels. I hung with my hoodlum friends, following each other around in their cars. That way, if one of them junkers broke down, they left it and rode in the working car. It was pretty boring, unless we found something new, like a couple of party girls. We did the same thing every Friday night. Met in the gravel pit, pooled our money and had Bobby's older brother buy us a couple of cases of Grain Belt Beer, after which he took his cut.

We had a key and could lock and unlock the gate to the pit. We stood around a bonfire bullshitin' each other, same ol shit. What we smoked then was Marlboro or Pall Mall. At the time we were known as hoodlums or juvies, and the good girls stayed away from us.

At 15, I got a drivers license and my own car, and graduated from that bunch. That car gave me all the freedom I ever wanted. My life became wrapped around cars, Harley's, hot rods, 4x4 pickups, and they all had to be fast. I learned how to make them go faster, which required a lot of money and gasoline, which brings me to my point.

By the time of my last move I sold them all: a '67 Cutlass that preceded a '38 chevy Hot Rod and my unfinished project- a '71 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 gas hog. I now drive a 6-cylinder Dodge Dakota and I am letting people pass me in their little underpowered pieces of shit that they have removed the muffler from, which makes them sound ill. I'm using far less gas, and I use synthetic oil. There is no Mullah getting any money from synthetic!

Anyhoo, seems BP can't cap that well in the gulf. So I also joined a group that wants to use “DRILL BABY DRILL” Sarah Palin to plug up that well. Doin' all I can!

This August is the class of 1965's 45th reunion, and they have invited me. I shouldn't go, but my 409 bud

e-mailed me and said he- along with the rest of my hoodlum buds - will be waiting for me. Rat...
