Joe Cocker - 1969 - With a Little Help from My Friends [originally posted on 9/20/2011]

My oldest bud Tom and I worked the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 320 booth at the Minnesota State Fair this year.

Last Saturday morning, I picked Tom up as I needed his help in loading and unloading my wheels. Tom lives near the Fairgrounds, but it's still a stretch, so we tried to get close to the building we would be sitting in. As it was we were directed to a parking spot that was about as far away from where we had to be as we could possibly get. In other words, we were a good half-mile from where we needed to be, and oh yeah, it was mostly uphill with thousands of people already walking the streets of these fairgrounds!

With me in a wheelchair, Tom needs a walking stick to motivate, after half an hour we sighted in on our destination. Without a compass and map, we had made it! The Minnesota State Fair is the 2nd largest in the country. Usually 1.5 million people attend, mainly to look and eat deep fat fried shit.

On the way in the crowd was medium to bothersome; on the way out it was humongous. Nobody watching where they walked, stuffing food that was on a stick in their mouths, seemed nearly half were pushing screaming babies in huge strollers. After the third person fell in my chair, I threatened to charge them for the ride. Being in a chair, I was a little over “Butt High”, but after Saturday, I've seen enough Butts: SOME PEOPLE SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO WEAR SHORTS! Why do those images remain in my memory bank?

Anyhoo it was downhill on the way out which made the trek easier. Once we were on our way out,we both decided, enough of that, GETTING TOO OLD FOR THIS!!!...
